Lung Tumor
Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the U.S., and it can be terrifying to get a diagnosis. However, there are steps you can take after your diagnosis to deal with your illness and begin planning for treatment.
Lung cancer treatment has evolved over the years toward customized targeted therapies that are specific to each patient. At Florida Endovascular and Interventional in South Florida, our interventional oncology specialists have been treating patients with lung tumors since we opened in 2016.
Interventional Oncology Treatments for Lung Cancer
Our interventional radiologists use a variety of minimally invasive techniques to safely and effectively shrink or destroy lung tumors. Conveniently, these procedures can be performed in our fully equipped, state-of-the-art in-office surgery suites. The best interventional procedure for you will depend on the location, size, and specific shape of the tumor.
Because a lung tumor can be in a tricky spot to get to surgically, interventional methods are often preferred. In addition to directly addressing the lung tumor itself, these treatments can help relieve a patient’s pain, discomfort, and significantly improve their quality of life.
Our interventional oncology methods for patients with lung tumors include:
After locating the lung tumor, we will use a catheter threaded through an artery to deliver specialized medications or other materials directly to the tumor site, blocking blood flow to the tumor and depriving cancer cells from receiving nutrients and oxygen.
This technique (embolization) can be used alone or in combination with other therapies to treat various types of lung cancer. It may also be used as part of a larger treatment plan that may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or other interventions.
Radiofrequency thermal ablation is a minimally invasive technique that uses a high-frequency electrical current to destroy tumor cells. During the procedure, we use imaging guidance to insert a thin needle-like probe through the skin and into the tumor. Then, using highly specialized equipment, we deliver an electrical charge to the target area that heats and kills cancer cells. This heat damages or destroys cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Cryoablation, also known as cryotherapy, is a minimally invasive procedure in which we deliver extreme cold temperatures to destroy cancer cells. The technique involves inserting a small probe through the skin and into the tumor site, where it delivers freezing temperatures that kill cancer cells. Like other interventional procedures, cryoablation uses imaging guidance for precise therapeutic administration.
